Our church response to COVID-19 Pandemic

Welcome to the United Church of Christ Vermillion

We come from diverse backgrounds forming an active church family in the Vermillion community, engaged in our own personal ministries, striving to be welcoming, embracing the promise "No Longer Strangers."

Sabbath Time 2020

Dear members and friends of the Vermillion UCC,

Grace and peace to each of you.  We hope this note finds you happy, healthy, and enjoying these cooler South Dakota days.

On Wednesday, September 16th, our UCC leadership met via Zoom to consider whether to continue in Sabbath time or explore the possibilities of re-opening.  Jake Kerby shared the careful report of our COVID Task Force.  This group has been meeting all summer to collect and evaluate information for us as we consider this important decision for our family of faith. The report included their research and findings, recommended phases, or steps, towards reopening, and best practices for health and safety.  Jake showed us South Dakota Department of Health websites which contain COVID data referred to in the report. You can find a copy of the full report on our website: COVID Task Force Report

After many questions and lengthy discussion, our leadership determined that to secure the best health and safety of our whole community we should continue in Sabbath time (with our building closed for large groups) through the end of the year.  This decision will be reevaluated in January. Additionally, the group asked the COVID Task Force to work on specific guidelines, protocols, and procedures to begin phased reopening – inviting specific smaller groups to meet in the church building when it is possible to do so.

Although this is disappointing in so many ways, we will continue to work diligently to provide creative opportunities for worship, prayer, education, care, and fellowship.  We would like to offer a special prayer of gratitude to our church staff who are working in so many ways to keep our family connected and strong during this time, and for the church leadership who met Wednesday night to make this difficult and important decision. Please let us know if you have questions or concerns.
