98th day of Sabbath Time 2020
To all our beloved UCC family and friends,
Grace, peace, and blessing to you and those whom you love. As we complete our 13th week of life “together but separate,” we hope this note finds you happy and healthy despite the continued challenges of the present epidemic.
This past Wednesday evening (June 17), about 30 members of our UCC congregational leadership met via Zoom to discuss whether to continue to remain in Sabbath time or the possibilities of reopening. Our discussion focused on a balanced perspective – acknowledging and respecting the science underlying the spread and prevention of the coronavirus while also extending grace and love that, above all else, seeks to protect one another and our wider community. Given the continued dangers of community gatherings (especially collective singing, such as hymns and chant during church), the return of our USD student community in August and the projections for an increase in the spread of the virus in the early fall, the leadership team feels it is premature to reconvene, even with preventative measures and has decided to extend Sabbath through the summer. We will meet again on September 16th, to re-access this decision.
In the weeks to come, two small task forces will be formed to help us continue to thrive as a church. The first will discuss creative and innovative ways to continue to be a people of faith and love even in Sabbath – to reach out more deeply, socially, and spiritually, to each other and our Vermillion community. The second will research and identify best practices for security and safety; and begin to design a plan for safely re-opening when we can finally share space again.
In the first letter to the Corinthians, we are reminded that; “love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things and endures all things. Love never ends.” Let this truth be our guide and our goal as we continue to be the church!
Please, let us know if you have any questions or concerns as we move forward, apart but together.
